Director Has the Industry's Highest Port Density A recent study of Director-class products reveals that Director has the highest port density of all available data monitoring switches. Director is tops in many port density categories; compared to its nearest competitor in each category:
- Director has 36% more total ports
- Director has 24% more 1 Gigabit ports
- Director provides 50% more integrated in-line Taps
- Director supports 26% more Span ports or external Taps
With its aggressive pricing Director has as much as a 3x price-performance advantage over competitive products. Director is also the leader in features such as fiber support, modular design, dual hot-swappable power supplies, and -48VDC models. Clearly, with Director, Net Optics continues to maintain its position as the industry's leader in network monitoring access. For more information
SFP+ Technology Net Optics customers and partners are familiar with SFP transceiver modules, which enable products such as the iTap GigaBit Fiber Port Aggregator with SFP to accommodate 1 Gigabit monitoring tools with different media interfaces (copper, SX, LX). You also know about XFP transceiver modules, which do the same thing for 10 Gigabit products such as the 10 GigaBit Fiber iBypass Switch with Heartbeat and XFP Monitor Ports. Now, with the upcoming 10G/1G Link Aggregator, we introduce you to a new transceiver module standard called SFP+. Why another module type? Because an SFP+ slot can support both 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit interfaces. In fact, the SFP+ ports in the 10G/1G Link Aggregator accept the same 1 Gigabit SFP modules used in previous products, while the new 10 Gigabit SFP+ modules are the same size as the SFP, which is slightly smaller than the 10 Gigabit XFP. Because of this new module standard, which is rapidly taking over the 10 Gigabit networking industry, the 10G/1G Link Aggregator allows you to mix 10 Gigabit and 1 Gigabit network links and tools in any combination you want!
2009 IT OUTLOOK The economic picture for 2009 is challenging, but companies will continue to invest in IT in order to streamline business processes and increase efficiency. IT consultant Dr. Jim Metzler of Ashton Metzler & Associates observed, "This is very clearly a time for IT organizations to make sure that any new initiative has very tangible business benefits." In his December 2008 IT Impact Brief, Dr. Metzler identified these five key IT initiatives for 2009:
- Deploy More Network Optimization — In particular, use WAN optimization methods such as compression and caching to avoid expensive WAN upgrades.
- Deploy More Application Optimization — Wan Optimization Controllers (WOCs) can also improve application performance with techniques that include TCP optimization and read ahead.
- Utilize Managed Service Providers (MSPs) — As organizations reduce headcount to save expenses, they often use MSPs for services such as IP telephony, application hosting, managed router services, unified communications, and call centers.
- Implement Green IT — Despite the economic downturn, environmental impacts remain of paramount importance. IT "green" initiatives address handling hazardous waste (Net Optics products are fully RoHS compliant and have recyclable aluminum chassis), conserving power (optical taps consume zero power), and cutting the carbon footprint — as well as travel expenses — using telepresence (which is enabled by a well-performing network).
- Implement Automation — With 70% of IT resources spent simply maintaining the status quo, automation of activities like network monitoring can be a substantial cost-cutter.
Interestingly, Dr. Metzler cautions against losing visibility of network traffic when implementing initiatives such as WAN optimization and outsourcing to MSPs, because he knows that being able to see 100% of the traffic on the network is imperative to maintaining control. For more information
