The growth of smartphone and mobile application use is driving a tremendous increase in signaling traffic on radio access and core networks. Signaling involves the underlying communications that supports user authentication, mobility, billing and charging, policy management and QoS (bearer) establishment.
Control plane traffic is very difficult to predict and signaling storms can overwhelm networks. Service providers must be proactive and precautionary in maintaining and safeguarding their signaling infrastructure. Potential threats include:
- Poor client device or application design that create unexpected signaling loads
- Misbehaving client devices that impact wireless infrastructure systems
- Infrastructure node failure from software faults
